曲線レールを2本組み合わせた形の分岐レールです。
This is a point rail with a shape of combination of two curve rails.

黄色いポイントを切り替えることで、分岐の進行方向を変えることができます。
合流する向きに走るときは、手でポイントを合わせなくてもプラレールの車輪が押しのけて進むようになっています。
You can switch the direction by switching the yellow point when a train runs to the forking direction.
When running to the merging direction, the wheel on the train pushes the point and you don’t have to set it before passing.

駅などには使いにくい形ですが、列車を行ったりきたりさせるリバース線をつくるのには便利なレールです。
レールの一部が「凹凹または凸凸の曲線レール」になっているからです。

名前の由来は、下の画像のような8の字のレイアウトだと思います。
しかし、8の字に車両を走らせるためには、真ん中にくるたびにポイントをいちいち手で切り替えなくてはなりません。
The origin of the name would be a figure-8 track shown below, however, you have to switch the point every time the train comes back to the intersection to let the train run figure-8.

本当の8の字走行を楽しみたい場合は、8の字ポイントレールではなく交差ポイントレール(R-14)を使ったほうが便利です。
If you want to do figure-8 operation, it’s recommended to use grade crossing point rail (R-14) rather than figure-8 point.

橋脚に載せることもできます。
Figure-8 point rail is compatible with pier blocks.

また、レールの端から黄色いポイントまでがとても短く、しかもカーブしているため、下り坂や曲線のあとに8の字ポイントレールがあると、ポイントを乗り越えてしまうことがあります。
Also, since the entry section toward the yellow point is very short and curving, a train may go off at the point when the train enters figure-8 point right after down slope or curve rail.

使いかたのコツ (Tips for Use)

1. 8の字レイアウトをつくる (To draw 8)

上でも紹介したとおり、8の字に組むのが8の字ポイントレールの基本の使いかたといえます。
The typical use of figure-8 point rail is to build figure-8 track as shown above.

2. デルタ線をつくる (To make a wye)

下の画像のように、3か所のどこから車両が入ってきても、ほかの2つのどちらにでも出られる分岐をデルタ線といいます。
A wye is a triangular junction which allows an incoming train to travel either direction, as shown below.

デルタ線をつくるのにも8の字ポイントレールが活躍します。
Figure-8 point rail is nice for building a wye.

3. リバース線に使う (To make a reverse track)

これも繰り返しですが、8の字ポイントレールが輝くのはリバース線です。
Again, figure-8 point rail is the most active to make reverse track.

上のデルタ線に曲線レールをつなげると、リバース線が作れます。
Connect curve rails to a wye to make a reverse track.

4. 坂曲線レールとの組み合わせ (Combination with sloping curve rails)

坂曲線レール (R-18) を8の字ポイントレールの合流側につなぐのはトラブルが起こりがちですが、分岐側に坂曲線レールをつなげると相性がよいです。
立体的なリバース線などを作ることができます。
A sloping curve rail (R-18) can cause a trouble when it’s connected to the merging end of figure-8 point rail as described above, but it goes very well when it’s connected to a branch of figure-8 point.
You’ll be able to build a 3-D reverse track, etc.
